Much of the film, particularly what is playing on a television at any given time, serves as Brad Bird's tribute to classic animation and the animators of the time period the film is set. At one point, a classic Maypo commercial is playing. Bird mentions he wanted to use the opening of the old Disney show, but the company didn't allow him to use it. "They don't like being paid tribute to so much," states Bird.
