For the first three years, when Jay Leno's "The Tonight Show" competed against David Letterman's "Late Show" on CBS, Letterman regularly beat Leno in the ratings. The turning point came in 1995 when Hugh Grant appeared on "The Tonight Show" as part of an apology tour for his arrest and subsequent scandal with call girl Divine Brown. That episode was a hit in the ratings, and Leno maintained a #1 rating from that point on until the end of his first run in 2009.
