The presence of Riley's parents' emotions hint what will eventually happen to her own emotions. Specifically, they're more balanced, less one-note, and have a larger console that allows them all to contribute. More specifically, Sadness is in charge in Riley's mother's head, where she is the first to pick up on Riley's emotional issues at dinner. As the movie makes clear later, one of Sadness's most important roles is empathy.
