It has been suggested that R. Lee Ermey was the only actor allowed to improvise, barring Peter Sellers, in a Stanley Kubrick film. However, there are some counterexamples: Malcolm McDowell came up with the idea of Alex singing "Singin' In The Rain" in Arancia meccanica (1971), and Jack Nicholson improvised the infamous "Here's Johnny" line in Shining (1980) (the line was almost cut as Kubrick had never watched The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962)). In that same movie, Danny Lloyd came up with the idea of "Tony" speaking through Danny Torrance's finger.
