Making this movie as motion capture was a necessity no matter what, since, according to Robert Zemeckis, bringing the book to life via live action would have cost $1 billion, as opposed to the original $165 million the budget ended up being. Zemeckis also suggested to Tom Hanks that he perform all the roles himself, but when that proved to be too exhausting for Hanks, it was whittled down to just six roles.
