The producers realized the suspension of disbelief would not last very long given Danny's rather scrawny and light build compared to other contestants at the Karate Championship, so they decided it would improve his stature to wear his full competition uniform ("Karategi") to make his arms look bigger and his character more believable, whereas some of the other contestants had their arms uncovered to show their musculature.
