The giant mech Robotnik creates with the Master Emerald is based on both the Death Egg Robot and the Giant Eggman Robo, which were the final boss of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) games respectively. The latter was also powered by the Master Emerald similarly to the robot in the film.
