The Beatles wanted to star in an adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, and asked Stanley Kubrick to direct. Kubrick declined, feeling the book was unfilmable. The cast would have been Paul McCartney as Frodo, George Harrison as Gandalf, Ringo Starr as Samwise, and John Lennon as Gollum.
