Although Balin (Ken Stott) is depicted as one of the oldest dwarves, in Middle-Earth lore, Balin was 17 years younger than Thorin. In the movie, Balin and Thorin are both well into their middle age when Smaug attacks Erebor, while in the books, they would have been around 7 and 24 years of age. The Hobbit novel starts 171 years after Smaug's attack, making them 177 and 195 years respectively. The movie doesn't explicitly mention how much time has elapsed since Smaug's invasion and the start of the movie, only that the dragon hasn't been seen for 60 years.
