One of the making-of books suggests that the alien did not outsmart Ripley by following her into the lifeboat to kill her, but rather was looking for a quiet spot in which to die. Director Sir Ridley Scott has indeed stated that the Alien's colour changes from nearly translucent gray to dark black over the course of the movie, signifying the creature's aging and dying process. This also explains why the Alien doesn't immediately chase and kill Ripley, and only attempts this when she tries to flush it out.
