Billy West was inspired by Lou Jacobi's performance in Il diario di Anna Frank (1959) when he was creating the character of Zoidberg. He imagined Zoidberg to have Yiddish mannerisms because of the last name. He also said he was attracted to the idea of a doctor that was poor.
