In Top Gun (1986) Charlie tells Maverick "We both know you won't be happy unless you're doing Mach 2 with your hair on fire." The opening scene in Top Gun: Maverick (2022) is Maverick working as a test pilot attempting to achieve Mach 10 in an experimental aircraft. Mach is the unit to measure the speed of sound (Mach 1 is equivalent to 1,125.33 feet per second, or 767.26 miles per hour, equivalent to 340 meters per second, or 1,234.8 kilometers per hour at the near ground level, decreasing with altitude since air density is getting lower the higher we go). Above 40,000 feet, the speed of sounds is over 100 MPH slower at 659.8 MPH (1,062 km/h); the fastest manned aircraft at the time of filming, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, achieved such speeds at altitudes in excess of 80,000 feet.Taken together, achieving Mach 10 implies that Maverick is flying at a speed of 6,958 mph or 10,620 km/h. For reference, Earth's equatorial circumference is 24,901 miles or 40,075 kilometers, and the great circle distance from Los Angeles to New York is 2446.3 miles or 3936 km; if the Darkstar hadn't failed and had continued flying, Maverick could go from LA to NY in under 25 minutes, a distance that would be at the edge of its endurance assuming it had an equivalent fuel load-out to the SR-71. The term "Mach" comes from Austrian scientist and physicist Ernst Mach.
