When the script was pitched to 20th Century Fox and after Chris Columbus was hired to direct, they had wanted the film to be a PG-rated family comedy. However Columbus had just finished directing Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost In New York (1992) both of which were two of the most successful children's comedies in movie history and he had wanted to make a movie more appealing to teenagers and adult audiences. As a result some of the stronger language and sexual innuendos were left in the script to secure a PG-13 rating so the film would be a tad edgy and appeal to teenagers and adults more than to smaller children as the Home Alone films did.
