After the show moved from Wednesdays to the Saturday Night comedy block, it dropped its serious issue-oriented tone and became broader, more slapstick oriented, to fit in with shows like "The Golden Girls." However, Geri Jewell, who used to be a recurring character, was limited to one or two appearances to fit in with the comedy-heavy format. She was told that every time she appears, it becomes a "very special episode," and they were trying to be less serious. For this reason, she decided not to return to the show.
