Donald Stralem, Palms Springs investment banker and head of the finance division at Columbia/Screen Gems Studios, was a long time tennis enthusiast and player. In the 1960's, he purchased the Palm Springs Racquet Club and on March 4, 1966, he had a private screening there of Born Free, for approximately 200 guests. This was technically the initial American screening of the film outside of Columbia Studios itself.
