The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (where HAL was created), was actually at the forefront of early computer design and interactive programming development. The HAL plant was meant to represent the Coordinated Science Laboratory, where the ILLIAC computer was conceived running PLATO, one of the first advanced interactive systems likely the precursor to HAL's artificial intelligence.
