George Lucas also ran into budget problems as a result of ensuring his loan with Twentieth Century Fox after the release of L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980), to the point of interfering with filming. Director Richard Marquand had to beg Lucas for a Rancor hand prop to be constructed so that close-ups of Mark Hamill could be filmed.
