This is the first DCEU film released after Warner Bros. made "DCEU" the franchise's official name in May 2020. Upon the franchise's announcement in 2014, it was commonly referred to as the DC Cinematic Universe, after the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Entertainment Weekly journalist Keith Staskiewicz was the first to coin "DC Extended Universe" as a joke in a July 2015 article about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and the name stuck. However, the franchise did not have an official name until 2020.
