When Krippendorf is disguised as a 'native chief', and Veronica poses as his interpreter, he utters a short phrase of gibberish to answer a question, which answer Veronica translates as, "He says [America is] a very large and frightening country, filled with many things he thought existed only in myth". The questioner exclaims: "And he said all of that in three syllables?!", and Veronica replies, 'It's a concise language'.This may be a reference to Moliere's comedy, 'Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme' ('The Would-Be Gentleman'), in which a character, disguised as a Turk, utters the phrase, 'Bel-men'; which his valet, as his interpreter, translates as a confirmation that the eponymous 'Bourgeois', M. Jourdain, should prepare himself and his daughter for her imminent marriage. 'What!', exclaims Jourdain; 'All that in two words?!'.
