It's odd that Mank's big scene occurred at San Simeon when Louis B. Mayer as a guest is in 1937. Marion Davies and William Randolph Hearst had departed MGM in 1934, and Davies retired from films in 1937. It's also odd that they would have been casually chatting about the filming of Maria Antonietta (1938), which was the straw that broke the camel's back. Davies wanted the role but it went to Norma Shearer. Davies and Hearst left MGM and set up shop at Warners.
