The novel 'De Aanslag' (The Assault), and by extension the movie adaptation, is loosely based on a wartime incident in Haarlem during WWII. Collaborator Fake Ploeg (Huub van der Lubbe) is largely based on Fake Krist, a Dutch police officer and national-socialist who helped the Nazis track down Jews, resistance fighters and people who had gone into hiding. He was assassinated by resistance members in 1944, and in retaliation for his death, the Nazis executed 10 inmates from a local prison; they also torched four houses in the street where Krist was killed, although none of their inhabitants were imprisoned or executed. Fake Ploeg's death in the movie (shot on his bike by a man and a woman) closely resembles the real-life assassination of collaborator W. M. Ragut, who was killed by resistance members Hannie Schaft and Jan Bonekamp, as also depicted in another Dutch war movie, La ragazza dai capelli rossi (1981).
