The original villain Evil Manta is similar to the Sea Witch from La sirenetta (1975), a giant black and purple ray. Early concepts for La sirenetta (1989) proposed Disney's Ursula as having a manta-like appearance. These are among several similarities shared between Disney's "The Little Mermaid" universe and the 1975 adaptation.
