The role of Palpatine was originally played by Ian Abercrombie until his death in 2012. Before Ian McDiarmid played the part in the film franchise, the part was voiced by Clive Revill in L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980). Revill and Abercrombie appeared in a Star Trek series as well. They have also played Alfred Pennyworth in Batman adaptations.
