It's been stated that the famous bell tower at Mission San Juan Bautista did not actually exist when the film was made, and that a steeple had been in its place before burning down. However, in a 1946 James Fitzpatrick travel log about California missions there is a small adobe bell tower, very similar to the one presented in Vertigo, that is clearly visible.
