The cobra maneuver that Vice Admiral "Cyclone" Simpson reproached Maverick for performing is, in real life, beyond the capability of any known fighter aircraft except the Russian Su-57 and MiG-29 variants. Maverick performed a limited cobra in his F-14 in the original film and again in his F-18A during this one.The maneuver is called Pugachev's Cobra, named for Viktor Pugachev, a Soviet pilot who popularized the move when he demonstrated it at an airshow in Paris in 1989, but it was previously performed by another Soviet, test pilot Igor Volk, and first discovered by Swedish pilots who called it kort parad ("short parry") after a maneuver in fencing. It was also used by Syrian pilots in the 1960's, who named the cobra the munawarat alsureat sifr, the "zero speed maneuver". It is potentially useful both in dog-fighting and in spoofing certain kinds of radar.But there is no record of the maneuver ever being used in genuine air to air combat, although it has been seen in dog-fighting training and in public demonstrations, so this would add one more record to Maverick's amazing career achievements as the first aviator to use Pugachev's Cobra to defeat an enemy in the air.
