In real history, the Magellan expedition was funded mostly by King Charles the First of Spain. The main goal was to find a western route to the Moluccas (Spice Islands). Trade was very profitable for Europeans, but an agreement with Portugal gave them a monopoly on the eastern route. It was found that the Pacific was far wider than expected, so that the route was not economic at the time. The minimum ocean distance between South America and Asia is in fact the longest between any two adjacent continents.
