When producer Gub Neal brokered an initial meeting between writer Jimmy McGovern and Robbie Coltrane, then mainly known for comedy roles, McGovern was resistant, saying "I see this character as a very thin man." Neal remembered that "Robbie roared with laughter, which really defused the tension".
