The Katie Coltrane character was originally written as a white male. Kurt Russell was considered for the role. Whoopi Goldberg was thrown in the mix because Sister Act (1992) had just come out and did very well. Producers felt her name was a strong enough draw for foreign investors. The script was rewritten to Whoopi Goldberg's casting because the pairing of a dinosaur was still unique enough that maybe Whoopi would bring some zaniness to it.
