Peter Scolari has said in interviews that he and Hanks were pitched by Miller-Milkis-Boyett Productions that the guys would only be in drag temporarily, that would just be a gag during the first season, and then (much like the Klinger character on MASH) they would drop the drag and become more "normal" characters. This promise turned out to be bogus, as the characters never did drop the drag act, and that stayed as the central premise of the series. (The fact that the show was named "Bosom Buddies" should have tipped them off).
