There were plans to film a direct sequel, with John Carpenter to direct and with Kurt Russell reprising his role. Announced for release in 1999, the project didn't progress past the early script stages. Instead, a sequel video game called The Thing (2002) was released three years later, and a prequel called La cosa (2011) another nine years later.
