The secret plot of Leland Owlsley and Madame Gao to eliminate Vanessa as they saw her as a distraction to Wilson's activities is based off of a similar plotline in the comics during the Frank Miller run where the Kingpin's associate Lynch tried to secretly murder Vanessa as he saw her influence was causing Wilson to turn his back on his criminal life, though in both storylines Vanessa survived.
