All American ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) actually have two crews termed Blue and Gold crews, named for the official Navy colors. Both crews have completely different enlisted men, chiefs, officers, and captains. This system of alternating crews was developed to maximize the strategic value and sustainability of the ships while allowing for a quality of life for the crew who manned them. When one crew returned from a two month patrol, the alternate crew would then assume and refit the ship to continue it's patrol while the relieved crew was released for R&R followed by refresher training. The film makes no mention of this fact, possibly leaving the audience to assume Alabama had only one crew and one captain when in reality there were always two.
