When Rafiki cracks open the fruit before discovering that Simba is alive is a reminiscent of when he cracks it open in the opening scene to anoint Simba and hence it symbolizes The rebirth of Simba as the upcoming new king. Also an extra layer of symbolism in the opening scene cracking open the fruit signifies separation of Simba from his mother's womb. In this scene it signifies separation from his past.
