In October 1992, TriStar Pictures and Amblin Entertainment were planning to start production on this movie the following year, and hired Joel Gross to re-write the script after they were impressed with his work on I tre moschettieri (1993). At the time, Steven Spielberg was producing this movie with the potential to direct. Gross completed his re-write in March 1993, and TriStar entered pre-production, creating early promotion for this movie at the ShoWest trade show. By December 1993, Branko Lustig was producing this movie with Spielberg, and Mikael Salomon was attached as director.
