Noomi Rapace landed the role of Elizabeth when a scheduled meeting in Los Angeles with producer Michael Costigan instead led to an unexpected meeting with Sir Ridley Scott. When Scott announced that he'd seen Uomini che odiano le donne (2009) three times and was very keen to work with her, Rapace accepted the offer right away. However, since Rapace wasn't a big star yet, the studio insisted on a screentest first. An old warehouse was quickly redressed to look like the interior of a futuristic ship, and Rapace did her test as Shaw opposite Rafe Spall who was initially cast as a British Holloway (he was later re-cast as American Millburn). After that, she was hired for the part.
