This show premiered the same year as the release of Super Mario Bros. (1993), which was based on the groundbreaking Nintendo video game. In the movie, Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo star as Italian-American plumbers Mario and Luigi who travel to a hi-tech city in an alternate dimension to rescue Princess Daisy from the evil dictator King Koopa. In the cartoon, Sonic and Princess Sally led the Freedom Fighters set out to free Mobius from the rule of Dr. Robotnik.
