The marine who shoots the Kurgan wears a t-shirt saying 'Hey Russia, up yours!'. This references the Cold War of the 80s when the film was made but can also be read another way, after previously Ramirez explains to MacLeod that the Kurgans came from Russia. Cold War was a long period of conflict between USA and USSR from 1947, a little after from the end of the World War II, where they two countries kept a tense duel of espionage and counter-espionage under the threat of an open nuclear war. Cold War was over when USSR finally dismantled in 1991, putting the end to the conflict.
