When James Gunn was hired by DC Films, he was given permission to adapt any property he wanted. Apart from the Suicide Squad, Gunn had also considered a Superman film. However, he admitted that it wouldn't have been a sequel to L'uomo d'acciaio (2013), the first film in the DC Extended Universe.
