In the years before "American Pie", Universal was having a box office losing streak. To mitigate financial risk, they sold the overseas rights to a lot of their films. Universal was unsure if a teen sex comedy would do well internationally, and they sold those rights to "American Pie". When the film became a global hit... Universal executives were kicking themselves. Fortunately, for Universal, none of the foreign distributors hold "Pie" rights in perpetuity, and the copyright has since reverted back to Universal's library.
