In an attempt to keep the show rooted in reality and keep costs controllable, the show's producers decided for better or worse have Spider-Man take on "real-life" criminals instead of the super villains from the comics. This was a wasted opportunity considering that there are numerous major Spider-Man villains who are relatively down-to-earth in concept and could have been depicted inexpensively such as the Chameleon, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, the Enforcers and Wilson Fisk/the Kingpin, among others.
