If you pay attention to the first and last pages of the story "The Mortal Remains", the trapper is the protagonist, and the story is told from his point of view. By contrast, the Frenchman is framed as the protagonist in the film itself, as he is the first and last person seen. Another hint towards this protagonist switch is how in the book, the illustration of the coachman is drawn from the trapper's point of view, but in the film, the coachman is depicted from the Frenchman's point of view instead.
