In 2001, the September 11th attacks took a major toll on the production of Law & Order: SVU, and also on its major cast members. Several cast and crew members volunteered to help the rescue effort. During a tribute video titled "Remembering 9-11", shared on YouTube by user "Pop Goes The Culture TV", actor Richard Belzer described via interview his personal experience with 9/11. Belzer, who was in France at the time of the attacks, stated that he had told his wife that he didn't think he could ever be funny again (The Law & Order: SVU character John Munch, whom Belzer portrayed, was also a comic relief character during the series). The main Law & Order: SVU title card voice-over by Steven Zirnkilton was also changed temporarily to include the following dedication: "On September 11th, 2001, New York City was ruthlessly and criminally attacked. While no tribute can ever heal the pain of that day, the producers of Law & Order dedicate this season to the victims and their families and to the firefighters and police officers who remind us every day with their lives and courage what it truly means to be an American". The opening sequence changed as well; NBC ordered the opening credits for the third season re-edited to remove images of the World Trade Center, which were seen at the beginning and ending; the credit sequences in the previous two seasons were not subsequently changed. Bootleg recordings of Law & Order: SVU appear generally in torrent downloads with the original title sequence containing aerial shots of the Twin Towers still visible, and Seasons 1 and 2 featured multiple scenic background shots of the infamous skyscrapers. 9/11 itself later came to be referenced in following seasons, including characters expressing disdain over the Patriot Act, suspect characters making references to 9/11 and to firefighting, and most notably, an entire plot in season 18's "Sanctuary" featured a character committing a hate crime against a Muslim family, claiming it was because his cousin died in 9/11.
