Alejandro G. Iñárritu had been a fan of Ryuichi Sakamoto for 30 years when he called to ask him to fly to L.A. the next day to discuss composing the score for the film. Despite having just completed a year of treatment for throat cancer and being extremely weak and exhausted, Sakamoto accepted the invitation because he himself was a huge admirer of Iñárritu and didn't want to turn down a chance to work with him, even though he already had turned down every other work offer he received and canceled all his appearances and performances. Though he found it extremely difficult for him to work on the score because of his condition, and it took him 6 months rather than the usual 2 or 3 months it would take him to do a score, Sakamoto credited the film and the opportunity to be outdoors and close to nature with saving his life, and he used his experience with cancer to inspire the score, saying "It's a movie about life and death."
