When producer Robert Jones saw Paul Thomas Anderson's two and a half hour first cut, he demanded cuts. Anderson refused, so Jones fired him and his editor, and started working on a shorter version. When the film was accepted for the Cannes Film Festival, it did so on the proviso that they received a Director's Cut, which Anderson completed the day before the festival.
