The scriptwriters used anagrams for a few key characters of the film. The name of Elly Kedward, the eponymous Blair Witch was an anagram of the name of Edward Kelley (1555-1597/1598), a famous occultist, scryer and alchemist. He reputedly had the ability to see spirits or angels in mirrors, and partnered up with fellow occultist John Dee. The name of mad hermit Rustin Parr was initially based on an anagram of the name of Grigori Rasputin (1869-1916), the so-called mad monk. Rasputin was a famous mystic, self-proclaimed holy man, faith healer, visionary, and supposed prophet.
