Yoshinobu Nishizaki came up with the basic concept (a crew voyages towards the planet Iscandar, along the way dealing with alien forces), while Leiji Matsumoto came up with the story revisions, art direction and ship designs (and, some say, the unique style that accredit him in fans' eyes as the true creator of Space Battleship Yamato).
