In history, Chief of Police James E. Davis (chief: 4/1/1926 - 12/29/1929 and 8/10/1933 - 11/18/1938) was demoted following the Collins debacle. However, far from being his comeuppance, this was merely a temporary setback in Davis' career. Two years after his demotion, he was reappointed Chief of the L.A.P.D., continuing to serve in this capacity until 1939.
