In April 2006, executive producer Lawrence O'Donnell told the New York Times that until the death of John Spencer (Leo McGarry), the show's writers had planned to have the Republican candidate, Arnold Vinick, win the election, and not the Democratic candidate, Matthew Santos. O'Donnell said that after Spencer's death, the writers decided that it would be too sad for the audience if Santos lost both his running mate (Leo) and the election at the same time.
