George A. Romero, director of La notte dei morti viventi (1968), was originally attached to write and direct, but left the project in 1999 due to creative differences over the script. The project was dormant for over a year before Paul W.S. Anderson signed on to write and direct. Anderson later claimed that he had once locked himself inside his apartment for 4 weeks while playing the first three Resident Evil games back-to-back, and became so obsessed with them that he contacted his producer Jeremy Bolt, telling him that they had to make this series into a movie.
