Animator Dave Spofford kept a pet rat named Waldo, who was used as a model for most of the rat characters. He was allowed to roam freely in the animator's studio on a catwalk near the ceiling built for him. One day Julie Andrews asked to be given a tour of the studio. On entering Spofford's office she was terrified to see a live rat running loose, and had to sit down while Bluth and the other crew members explained that he was harmless.
